Description Manhattan Cutlery Co Sheffield HUNTERS KNIFE-marked blade small Bowie knife made circa 1860th-1880th. Genuine stag and German silver fittings handle; hard-to-find maker. Scarce Sheffield-made 1860th-1880 full-tang construction hunting Bowie with THE HUNTERS KNIFE etched on the blade. Made by Manhattan Cutlery Co. in Sheffield, England. Manhattan Cutlery Co Bowies are pretty hard-to-find, this type is rare in any shape or form nowadays. Ricasso is sharply stamped MANHATTAN / CUTLERY, Co / SHEFFIELD. At one point the blade was finely etched THE HUNTERS KNIFE inside the floral scrolls on one side. The etching is mostly gone but it is still visible under the right angle. Starting about 1848 a lot of Sheffield cutlery makers started coming up with American-sounding names and slogans in order to capitalize on the growing American market. This attractive Hunting Bowie is about 10-1/8″ / 25.8 cm overall; clip-point blade is about 6″ / 15.2 cm long. The blade is very sharp still; the tip is intact. Genuine stag handle scales have large chips on both sides near the pommel; the damage was repaired with a thin twine. One of the handle scales has a thin rectangular silver inlay on one side. Wide T-guard is made of German silver; all parts are tight with no play. There is no sheath.
