Description USA 1902 Wells Fargo silver so-called Dollar medal (HK-296); authenticated and graded by NGC MS62. Very popular and hard-to-find So-Called $1 type with attractive original light-gray patina. FREE SHIPPING WITHIN THE U.S. FOR THIS ITEM! This rare “So-Called Dollar” 1-year type was issued by Wells Fargo & Company in March 1902 as a special  Wells Fargo Semicentennial issue. In 1902 these strikingly beautiful medals were given to Wells Fargo employees who worked for the company for more than one year. The medal’s design is simply beautiful, although it is not known who or where exactly designed or struck this issue for Wells Fargo. Wells Fargo & Co. is one of America’s Wild West true legends – this banking business and express delivery services company was launched in 1852 by Henry F. Wells from Vermont and William G. Fargo from New York. Wells Fargo & Company was established in San Francisco, California, to serve gold miners’ financial needs and provide secure deliveries during the California Gold Rush. By 1880, there were 573 Wells Fargo Offices, Agents and Correspondents in the West. Wells Fargo has famously declared that the company was “absolutely guaranteeing” their handling and delivery of gold to their customers; see the Wells Fargo Co 1868 newspaper ad copy attached. At the peak of its trade, there were 100 Wells Fargo offices in the California’s Mother Lode area alone. Medal’s description – obverse: upper stage coach scene; on ribbon, across Wells Fargo & Company; below Pony Express scene. Reverse: a scene of ship, factory, train (microscopic Wells Fargo and Company Express on baggage car), quill pens and keys; clenched upright hand below emitting sparks or rays; across center, on ribbon 1852 – March 18th 1902; below Express and Banking; at bottom Fidelity. About 40mm diameter. Not cleaned; these are the actual photos. Scarce type but it is super-rare in the original Mint State grade. This specimen has been authenticated and graded by NGC as MS62 (NGC certification number 2947581-005). NGC is one of America’s best and most stringent grading services.
