Description This shoulder sleeve insignia was worn by the “Big Red One’s” of the First Infantry Division on their Army Combat Uniforms. They were given this nick-name from this patch. The 1st Infantry Divison became active in 1917. They were also nick-named the “Bloody First” or the “Fighting First”. The Big Red One’s landed on Omaha Beach during the D-Day invasion and were very active during WW2 not just in Normandy but also at Algeria, the Ardennes, Tunisia, Sicily and the Rhineland.
